Description
MCM 1960's Vintage BRIGHT YELLOW IRON JC Penney Steam Clothes-Fabric.Looks Like new! The Teflon® (by DuPont) Soleplate is virtually spotless. Tested and works. Only one very small paint chip near the top point 1/64" diameter (see first photo, just below the chrome nose for a closeup). I believe the iron was made by Westinghouse and sold by JC Penny. A few of the well known large department stores marketed items made by others and put their name on it.
The included User Guide has printed the company LOGO that JCPenney only used between 1963 and 1971 (Penneys), that, along with the distinctive bright yellow (they called it Bright Buttercup) color of this iron dates that it is from the mid to late -1960's. A wonderful example of Mid Century Modern's transition (and capitalization) from the era of B/W to Full Color TV. Also of note is that there isn't a UPC Bar Code on the box which first came into use in 1974.
User Guide, and other original paperwork is still in the box.
The power cord looks really good, but when you bend it, you can hear and feel a slight crackling as if the inner wire's vinyl coating has become brittle due to age. If you are buying this to use (rather than being a collectible show piece), I'd recommend replacement of the power cord to be safe (I'd be the first thing I'd do. You can buy clothe cord, but new and much safer. I love this iron! As a reseller there are things you are tempted to keep and this is one of them. It's so cool! I was around back then and I don't remember having a bright colored iron. Only stainless.
